head unit and gain question

ive been installing my system, and was wondering if it is alright to set the gain with the bass at 0, but to turn it up sometimes. i have a nak deck and it only has bass, mid, and treble adjustments from -6 to +6. I set the gains for everything at zero. My friend has a sony deck, and when he shows off his system, he always turns on "loudness" and then turns the "sub adjustment" all the way up. Is this bad or what?
