having trouble with Kenwood Excelon kdc-x891 head unit

Well, I just installed the hu and can't get it off demo mode, which through searching the net I've found is a common problem. I can't even get to the menu to turn demo mode off. "Call" keeps flashing on the screen. Whenever I play the ipod or a cd through it it'll play for a few seconds and then stop. If anyone else has had these issues what did you do? I have read the owner's manual several times trying to figure this out. Thanks.
