Having trouble with gain setting and good sound out of system

I have an infinity 475a amp that's hooked up to a pioneer head unit. i've been adjusting the gain settings to match the voltage that matches my hu and amp. However, I don't think that the speakers get the kick that I want them to have. The sound is coming out clean and clear, but it doesn't have that thump to it. I've tried to adjust the settings on the head unit to accomplish this, but I haven't gotten a satisfactory setting. If I try to increase the gain on the amplifier, my speakers start to pick up alternator whine or hissing. Any help with this would be appreciated.
