Have a question regarding wire size needed vs. what wire size the amp is calling for.

So, I have an Alpine MRX-55 amp. The amp calls for 8 gauge power / ground.

I've currently got an 8 gauge wire kit in the car because that's what the amp is sized for (says 8ga max power/ground)

Anyways, as most will know, the amp is rated at 550W RMS, my amp was benchmarked at 630W RMS.

My amp has (2) 30A fuses, and my wire kit came with a 50A fuse. I recently bought a pack of 60A fuses to replace the fuse in the wire kit, however, after checking current draw/etc on the12volt.com, I realized that the amp should properly be connected with a 4ga wiring kit.

My question, after all that, is what is the best way to connect a 4ga wire into an 8ga power supply terminal?

Would the best way be to just cut some of the wire to fit it into the amps power supply? Buy an adapter? What?

Thanks!

You can use a reducer terminal.

If the amp has spade connectors, they make 4ga to 8ga spade connectors. If ist set screw type, the reducers will work great.

You could also run 4ga right up to the amp and then install a fuse right next to the amp. Then come out of the fuse with a very short run of 8g....6" or less and you will

be just fine.

trimming off a few strands is fine, and probably would offer the least resistance of any option.

Voltage drop in wire is a function of cross section AND length. You're effecting the cross section, but almost no length so the effect on resistance is negligible. Plus it's free.

Surprisingly enough, the 4G wire fit into the amp, despite the fact that it calls for 8G max. It's KnuKonceptz wire, so I know it's slightly oversized, but ya... I was impressed that it fit into the amp. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The more times you put it in and take it out the hole gets bigger and bigger lol //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif
