Well for the 38 super, I have never shot one but have seen a few 1911 chambered for it. It was one of those cartridges used for a short time with law enforcement but didnt catch on to much I dont think. I am pretty sure the hole idea on the 38 super was to get a round inbetween the 38 special and the 357 mag power wise and make it into an auto loading cartridge. I also believe it spawned another round called the 9mm federal or maybe vice versa. I think the 9x19 is what kept the 38 super from getting very popular since it can be loaded to produce similar velocity and energy as the 38 super, plus the 9x19 uses a shorter casing which means you will have a shorter action and it will fit in a more compact frame/design..
30-06 mean 30 caliber in 1906. not sure on the 30-30 since I was never really interested in it.
cool !, i didnt understand any of that

i believe ur right about the rise and fall of the .38 super. i seem to remember something about it when my mother (yep, my mommy) was in law enforcement. at the time they were issued .38 special revolvers, unless they wanted to purchase their own, in which case most bought .357's. this is the early to mid eighties, and gang's such as the bloods and the crypts

50 brownie points for someone OTHER then phoneman who can tell me why the early taurus auto's looked(and were almost internally)EXACTLY like the beretta's.....

the pro shooting crowd picked up on the .38 super (most reload, duhh) because of it's stability and relatively light recoil. also, the fact most .38 super's were on the 1911 frame made parts abundent..

ur correct about 30/06 sir...

i'm still looking up the 30/30..

any takers on the 9mm parabellum??

what firearm in history made the most signifigant use out of the parabellum? (no,it isn't the tec 9 or a glock)

ok..hehe..

For the 9mm question, were you looking for 9mm Luger? Or maybe I read it wrong :p

I beleive Taurus was manufactured by Beretta, or vice versa maybe?

Edit: Btw, Mrray or Phoneman, do either one of you have any idea what an older 32 cal darringer pistol would go for these days? Or a P38?

close but not quite.... beretta opened a factory in brazil, where taurus was made. brazilian law says that in order to manufactor there you have to turn over your patent...hence taurus, a brazilian company, was able to acquire the patent to beretta and the copycat firearm was born..which was great for taurus, because up until that point, their firearms weren't much better then jennings or norinco. it still took them awhile, but they got better due to copying a superior firearm...

still noone on which is the parabellum...9x17 or the 9x19?

as to the derringer...depends on brand and condition...your best bet is the shooters bible. it'll even give you an idea on how to appraise the condition.

walthers hold their value, so your p38, if in excellent condition oughta be worth around $300-$400...but that is just a guess..again, the shooter's bible is a book u need to look into.....

alright phoneman...u can answer the 9mm question...hehe

i still haven't looked up the 30/30 story...

The 9x17 is the .380ACP the 9x18 is the 9mm Makarov and the 9x19 is the Parabellum.

Taurus also acquired some of the Baretta tooling, not just the patent. Their revlovers look very much like the older S&Ws for the same reason.

BTW, I wouldn't lump Norinco in with Jennings. They made pretty much the best 1911 of the '90s. When Colt and Springfield went to the crappy 1991 design, Norinco bought their old tooling and started producing the old weapon at a fraction of the cost. I have one and I can attest to their quality. The frames were very highly sought after as the basis for IPSC race guns because they would hold up to the hot loads typically used in competition where the Colt and Springfield would not. The gun import ban made them even harder to come by.

It's this simple. Handguns were designed to do one thing, kill people. For you lamers out there, guns don't kill people, people kill people. Now with that in mind, the ONLY PROVEN manstopper is the .45 caliber. So that is my weapon of choice.

The parabellum is the 9mm Luger (9X19). German Nazi round of choice and hot weapon to collectors because the Luger design was one of the first semi-automatic pistols... (edit: Nevermind, I saw it up there already...)

"The 30-30 Win. is a historically popular deer cartridge developed over 100 years ago for the famous Model 94 lever-action rifle. The "30-30 Win." designation refers to a 30-caliber bullet backed by 30 grains of powder. While this cartridge was certainly powerful medicine around the turn of the last century, it is under-powered when compared to modern cartridges and should be used only for short- to medium-range shots." from http://www.remington.com

My last note on the ammo... One round of any caliber in the right spot is better than 15 in the wrong. Gun control is aiming well.

As far as killing people.... I will take my .22 target pistol over any pistol //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Unless they have a vest on

Qoute: "the ONLY PROVEN manstopper is the .45 caliber."

One .22 round is more apt to kill you than a .45 Sure the .45 is going to leave a bigger hole but if it hits you in the gut, you have a lot greater chance of surviving with a .45.

awesome!! thanks man!

and ur right in the second paragrah there too!!

and helo...i did not know about norinco in the early 90's...i will have to look that up..at that time, revolvers were my preferred firearm...

and to whomever said that a .45 is the only proven manstopper (yeah, yeah steve)..i believe if u look it up, the .22 magnum actually is a better manstopper, percentage wise and using ballistic jello, but i believe the .357 holds the highest percentage for " one shot " kills.

i will try to find the chart that lists the percentages...phoneman, a lil help?

For you non-beleivers....The reason a .22 is so dangerous, is the fact that it is so light and small, it doesnt go straight through you. Mrray, I forgot all about the 22 mag! Problem is, when the .22 projectile goes in and hits a bone or anything with any mass, it bounces off. As its bouncing off it has already flattened to say.. 1/2-3/4 the size of a dime?.. and it just starts ripping stuff apart inside of you.

to go against my little arguement..hehe...here's this...

You want a handgun cartridge that has a Hatcher value of over 50 for the most effective stopping power. Values over 55 have diminishing returns in that you don’t gain any significant increase in stopping power for the extra recoil and control you must cope with. Handgun cartridges that don’t make a value of at least 50, should not considered for self-defense. If the rating of your handgun cartridge is under 30, it only has about a 30% chance of producing a one shot stop. Hatcher Ratings of 30 to 49 raise a one shot stop to approximately a 50% chance. Ratings of 50 or higher produce a one shot stop about 90% of the time.

Handgun Cartridge Type ..................... Hatcher Rating

.45 ACP full metal jacket 230 grain .......... 49.1

.45 ACP jacketed hollow point 230 grain ...... 60.7

.44 Magnum full metal jacket 240 grain ....... 92.3

*.44 Magnum lead wad cutter 240 grain ......... 136.8

.44 Special full metal jacket 240 grain ...... 51.6

*.44 Special lead wad cutter 240 grain ............. 76.5

.41 Magnum full metal jacket 230 grain ............. 54

*.41 Magnum lead wad cutter 230 grain .............. 80

10 millimeter full metal jacket 180 grain .......... 50.3

10 millimeter jacketed hollow point 180 grain ..62.1

.40 S&W full metal jacket flat nose 180 grain ...... 53.4

.40 S&W jacketed hollow point 180 grain ....... 59.4

.38 Special full metal jacket 158 grain ...... 26.7

*.38 Special lead wad cutter 158 grain ............. 39.7

**.357 Magnum full metal jacket 158 grain ..... 32.7

**.357 Magnum lead wad cutter 158 grain ............ 48.5

.357 SIG full metal jacket 147 grain ................ 36.6

.357 SIG jacketed hollow point 147 grain ..... 45.2

9 millimeter full metal jacket 147 grain ............ 32.3

9 millimeter jacketed hollow point 147 grain ... 39.9

.380 Auto jacketed hollow point 95 grain ..... 18.3

.32 Auto jacketed hollow point 71 grain ...... 11.1

.25 Auto jacketed hollow point 50 grain ...... 3.7

.22 Long Rifle jacketed hollow point 40 grain ... 4.2

* Jacketed hollow points will have the same rating as wad cutter bullets if the bullet hollow tip is greater than 1/2 of the caliber of the bullet.

* .357 Magnum ratings are taken from a firearm with a 3 inch barrel. Longer barrels will raise the rating of the round.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this is hatcher's chart...i've never seen this before....hmmmmmmmmmm

well, i can't find the graph i'm looking for..i'll keep looking..

right now, according to hatcher, the .41 magnum fmj 230 grain is the best all around manstopper (considerin recoil as well as knockdown power)
