H.O. Alt trouble.

I have a 200 amp H.O. alt and the problem is that when my rpm's exceed 3000 the alt totally shuts off and produces no voltage. So i call up the company and they tell me that my belt is slipping. So they reccommend i put on a smaller belt and apply belt dressing. So i do that and it still does the same thing. Is it that my alt is bad and they are giving me the run arround or is there something else i can do to prevent my belt from slipping.

have you checked the pulley for any signs of damage which would cause the slippage?

yes, it is a band new pulley. But what chould i be looking for just in case.

hmm, have someone rev to 3k and see if the alt stops spinning or slows down significantly.

When something is spinning that fast it is hard to tell. . I can pull on the throttle cable from the engine compartment. It seems to be doing better now that i have added belt dressing. It only cuts out at 4000 Rpm's.

well if its shutting off, it would be slowing down to around idle speed or lower, you surely could tell a diff between idle and 3k rpm. draw a small spot on the pulley so you can watch it.

I can't believe they told you to put belt dressing on it. You're not supposed to put belt dressing on serpentine belts, it says so right on the packages.

internal regulator or external? if it looks normal when running ill bet the regulator is whats going out
