guitar players...

tuner, good strings, find tabs for a song you like, learn key signature scales and chords

and most of all

PRACTICE EVERY ****ING DAY i've been playing for about 6-7 years and i couldnt play shit for shit until about my 1.5-2nd year. i mean until about my 2nd year i couldnt play in front of people and it sound decent. just practice practice practice practice.....

also to add, when you learn chords you need to learn strumming. Like try and work on 1 and ah 2 and ah....till four. So for example say 1 and ah outloud and strum as you say that. You are aiming to match your hand hitting the chord as you are saying 1, then and, then ah. This will teach you to strum on beats instead of just strumming widly and such. It's probably hard to understand what I mean b/c I'm a horrible person to explain stuff when it comes to guitar but I'm sure I could find something on youtube. Also you will need to learn how to do up and down strokes. You don't want to learn just to strum downwards, you need to learn both. It will help when you learn double picking. If you want some books to pick up try and find the books by brett duncan. I have 4 books by him and they teach basic and advance stuff. It also comes with cd's so you can play along. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up sometime.
A guy I've been watching on youtube is thenextleveguitar.com Pretty cool dude, kind of corny but he knows his stuff. Most of it is songs but he does have some scales, progressions and basic info.

edit: buy a metronome as well, lol.

weren't you just telling me about how you joined an indian rock group because you only have to play one cord?

learn to play a real instrument like a harmonica. i've been trying for a year and still **** at it, and i can't find lessons anywhere //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
last year in the dorms i lived across from a guy who got a harmonica and lessons on tape. Worst gift you could ever get someone if you have to live near them. Eventually he got good enough that he could play it while in halo games and sing merry shit talking songs. Quite the talent. Nothings funnier then waking up to a blues song about no scoping a guy with a 12 yearolds voice.

lol that's really funny, because every now and then i'll play it while i'm in halo just to piss people off. i can't play any blues. i can only play stupid campfire songs like she'll be comin round the mountain lol

ive been watchin a few videos, and even though im playing the same notes/chords, it doesnt sound the same as the guy playing...guitar is tuned and everything. it sounds like its just got a different tone

Probably does do you have nylon or steel strings? All strings sound different. All guitars sound different. Even two guitars of the same model can sound slightly different. Is your neck in good shape? Is it dry?

its brand new (just bought an electric) and w/e strings come on the fender strats is what its got. like ac/dc for example, they have a raw kinda sound, and i cant seem to get that out of my guitar //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif even for a beginner, i shoudl be able to get the power chords to sound like theirs i would think....

i don't play guitar but a lot of my friends do so i don't know how accurate my knowledge is, but it's my understanding that the way to get different sounds is one of three ways

a. different settings on amps/cabs or whatever

b. different tuning(i.e drop d and such)

and c. effects pedals.

those are the three most common anyway. i know tom morello from rage against the machine had a couple songs where he just did some crazy shit to get different sounds(like in a video of him i saw him pick his guitar with his amp chord)

Strats might not have that raw sound your looking for because of their single coil pickups. But to help get a nice distorted tone put the pickups selector all the way back and turn your amp gain up.

What kind of amp do you have if you even have one?

back being which direction? and the amp i have is a fender frontman 15g amp

Its the switch looking thing that is below the pickups. Actually changes the tone of the guitar quite a bit. Play with a clean and then distorted tone and you will see the difference.

As for the amp make sure you select the DRIVE CHANNEL and the drive select switch. Thats if your looking for a distorted rock/metal tone

yeah man like I was saying online, soon you'll start understanding "tone." You probably aren't getting the AC/DC tone you are after using a strat b/c angus uses a gibson SG. I'm pretty sure the SG has humbuckers just off the top of my head were as fender uses those 3 single coil pickups. I know it doesn't really make sense now but a lot and I mean a lot of factors play into tone. The pickup's is just one thing you start getting into effects, amps, settings, just lots of different factors.

You are probably playing the same chords but the "crunch" or possibly distortion that angus has is b/c of his "tone." So don't let this get to you b/c you'll start spending bucks whenever you want to sound like your idle.

theres drive select and then a drive volume knob...

youll want to hit the drive select button which activates the drive channel. Then you will control the overall volume with the drive volume. Then the gain knob determines how much distortion is applied. Try turning the normal volume all the way down but you might need it up a little depending on the way this amp operates. Play around with those knobs and you should get close to a rock sound.
