ground question

so yeah..i know its supposed to be as short as possible, within reason, to the amp.

my impression that is, if you have like a long ground..you will have distortion?

if thats true, then why isnt that the case when you run ground cable back to the battery? or does it still?

no. there are lots of installs with a long ground needed. mines longer than i would want it. but it works fine, as long as the connection is clean. and has the lowest/no resistance possibal.

is there an optimal ground length, or just do it so it works (keeping in mind having a solid, clean connection)

optimal would be 12" and under. i know mine is like 2.5-3 feet because it goes from the front of my trunk to the back where it is bolted in at, then i have 2 1.5feet wires coming out of the distro block and i have no issues. how long are you thinking yours is gonna be.
