I don't know shit about them. Whats a good unit I could get for my dad for chrismas for about 200 or less? I don't want anything too fancy. Just simple to use and effective.
I got the lowest line TOMTOM at walmart the other day for $120 .... It pretty much does everything I want it to do. I just changed the voice on it today to Billy Bob Thorton's "slingblade" character.
i just got a garmin nuvi 200w. i like it alot. it is really simple to use and is accurate when it comes to directions. the 205w is the newer version and is more expensive, but does not have much more options. the w stands for wide screen which i highly reccomend. i believe you can get the 200w for about 130 and the 205w for 200. basically the same unit. and the tom tom is not as user frinedly and not as easy to use but has a bit more features.
and as i was researching, alot of people said it took a while for nuvi to obtain sattelites. well mine only takes abouy 5-10 seconds so if that is a concern dont worry about it. i love mine so far.

ya if you always leave it connected then it should find sattelites right away. and i found if you turn it on in the driveway as opposed to in the garage it finds it alot quicker.
if you leave the garmin connected to the charger BUT turned off, it never loses the satellite connection. Once you unplug it from the charger AND turn it off, thats when you lose the connection, and if in certain rural area's, it can take a bit to locate a new connection. I think it has to do with the way they work, heres a link:
