Got a question about this port design

I saw this box in another thread and I think I may modify my box to look something like this...The box I have my 18" DR in is sub back, port to the drivers side, and is 60 sq. inches of slot port. I could easily add a box to the side and have a similar setup as this, and it seems like sub/port back would yield a lot more output...

My question is how would this affect the tuning or overall sound of the sub? And would this actually give me more port area? My port is in the same spot as these two aeros...
