I have an Audison SRx3 Amp (3 channel, 1 for sub)

http://www.audison.eu/download.php?file=assets/1332336283_eng_SRX3manuale_2002.pdf&name=srx_3_manual

Amp specs (RMS):

4 Ohms: 75Wx2 + 250W

2x4 Ohms + 2 Ohms: 65Wx2 + 340W

2x2 Ohms + 4 Ohms: 110Wx2 + 220W

2 Ohms: 95Wx2 315W

My Adire Shiva MKIII 8 Ohm DVC blew so I'm after a new Sub that performs as good or better.

Sub box is 65cm cube with 8cm port (MDF).

I dont have speakers running from the Amp yet.

I dont want to buy cheap mass production stuff, forget Sony etc..

I probably prefer sound quality over loudness, but I do like a deep clean bass note.

Willing to spend around $US500+

Any suggestions?

Sundown Audio SD v3 12 or incriminator audio flatlyne would get my votes. They are solid underhung designs if you want SQ. Also think there is is an 12 based on a Aura Sounds NRT motor on here. If you're not after a traditional SQ driver and don't mind overhung subs your options increase exponentially.

Seeing as you're in Australia I don't know how accessible those subs are. What brands are easily available over there?

After reading reviews and discussions I decided to buy the JL 12W3v3 2Ohm, apparently the SQ is half decent, hopefully it is good enough and I don't need to modify the sub box.

I'll install it today and report back.

Yes I believe it is about 60-65cm each edge. I haven't measured it.

I was very keen on getting a G5 but I could find a place that sells them in Aus. I'd rather not buy one from overseas for warranty reasons.

You can't go wrong with JL w3, the newer model sound better than the old one.

The store didnt have the sub available in the JL box so I put it in my existing box. Probably has the wrong capacity but it definitely sounds cleaner than the Adire Shiva MKIII. Seems louder as well. I set the cut off to 220Hz to fill some mid bass. Sub faces to the rear. Car is an Audi A5.

It vibrates the parcel tray quite badly though, the boot floor as well! Looks like I need to install some sound deadener on the parcel tray.

But how do I stop the boot floor from vibrating? Some foam under the box perhaps?

Is the JL box any good or should I make a custom one?

I just measured it now, it is 40cm x 37cm x 37cm (way off my original guess lol).

According to JL, ported should be 50Litres.

The 12W3v3-2 is best used with amplifier power in the 150W - 500W range and is optimized to operate in a compact 1.25 cu. ft. (35.4 l) sealed enclosure, or a 1.75 cu. ft. (49.6 l) ported enclosure. Detailed enclosure recommendations can be found in the "Specifications" tab.

The MDF is about 1cm thick, so the calculation is:

36 x 36 x 39 = 50544

50544 / 1000 = 50.5 Litres.

So the box is about the right size? Or did I calculate it wrong?

MDF should be more like 2 cm thick. 1 cm will be a very structurally weak box and would lose out on output, add another layer on the outside if you can. You'll also want to subtract subwoofer displacement (cubic feet the sub's motor and basket takes up). If you are only a few cubic feet away. If you are lacking in airspace, you can fill the box up with polyfill to get slightly better performance.

it probably is about 2cm thick, I didnt measure that.

I didnt know you had to factor in the volume of the sub itself as well, that means it's probably more like 35L, not 50L.

Looks like I need a bigger box. I'll visit a car audio store on the weekend, I'm sure they can calculate it and provide a suitable box.

Torres' Box Tuning Calculator - Updated 8/18 - Subwoofers / Enclosures - SMD Forum

download this software, its pretty comprehensive on enclosure calculating, has inches centimeters and millimeters too.

I doubt the sub actually takes that much space. Usually .1 cubic feet to .14, not sure how that will translate to liters.
