Opeth and Amon Amarth are now considered popular? Where have I been. Amon rules by the way!!Probably too mainstream or not heavy enough but here are a bunch of bands I can think of that might be worth looking up. You've probably already heard most of them too though
Opeth
Amon Amarth
Mudvayne
Sonata Artica
In Flames
Dragon Force
Strapping Young Lad
Soilwork
Stone Sour (30/30-150)
August Burns Red
Underoath
All that Remains
my 2 cents
edit: Few more
Lacuna Coil
Children of Bodom
a list without a single old school metal band on it, doesn't shit on anything.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gifbullet for my valentine atreyu

Naw I was thinking more Mudvayne, Stone Sour and All That remains when I said that. Bands you have a chance of hearing on regular radio lol. You're a dumbass.you need to stick with the old school, like Motorhead.I hate that Death Metal $hit,no talent.
bullet is a great metal band, my favorite album to date is Trivum's ascendancy, great fkn albumsome other groups not mentioned that might appease some people.
Static X, Powerman 5000, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Cold, Bullet for my Valentine (can't believe I forgot them), Avenged Sevenfold (older stuff) Trivium
probably starting to fall away from the "heavy metal" genre but its all pretty good stuff.
Fear Factory, Five Finger Death Punch, Daath, Deicide, Dying *****, etc.
Too many different little sub-genres of metal out there to really suggest any one type.
My suggestion is to listen to Fear Factory's Demanufacture album from start to finish. One of the best metal albums ever made.
