Most messed up part about car audio theft is around here, at least, 99% of it's committed by people who know the victim personally, and know it's in the car.
I had a guy help me change the starter in my old jetta, and wouldn't you know, my kenwood 979 was gone when i got out of work.
Haven't seen the dude since, not even sure what i'd say to him if i saw him again.

I've also heard a lot of times crooked shops will actually 'steal-back' equipment they sell/install for people, but i never knew how true that was.
