you can get a really nice mirror finish if you do it right.

yesss forgot to meation, you need to scuff sand with liek 320 after every coat, i even do the last coat then use a tack cloth and rub the shit out of it, i use sanding sealer right after its stained before i lacuer it, usually works welli work at an unfinished furnature store , are you scuffing between coats of laquer ?
are they thick enough ? try some high gloss polyurethane its way easier to work with , use the foam spongue brushes to elimate brush marks
