General Q for a 12W7

It does just that, boosts the bass. You can use it to adjust the amount of bass that is being sent to your sub.

no I understand that the bass boost makes it louder, but is there a difference between setting the sub bass output level on my head unit and increasing the bass boost?

Bass boost on an amplifier, generally speaking, boosts the signal at 40hz. Essentially it's a one band EQ at 40hz. The subwoofer control on the HU effects all frequencies that the subwoofer plays.

is 40Hz a particular sound that sounds better?

Cobra, I appreciate the info..will I not shorten the life of the subwoofer by increasing the sub bass output on the head unit? JL 12W7's are pretty popular; do they have a good life-span? What determines the life of the driver - im using 750 watts RMS which is what is suggested by JL for the sub for optimum playing sound. Does the bass boost request more amp power, or...?
