People took on DVD and CD quickly because it was a huge jump in quality and convenience. SACD and XRCD failed because the jump is marginal on "normal" equipment.

HD is a huge jump in quality and all the new players are backwards compatible..... it'll catch on faster than one might think....

Well, there are alot of titles that are being sold on many different formats, not just Lucasfilms. Lucky thing is we do NOT have to buy them if we don't want to.
The biggest differences between the old VHS and current DVD is that VHS tapes wore out with time and play cycles where as DVDs (if cared for properly) will not. So we really won't be a slave to the hi-def formats since our DVDs aren't going to be subject to wear and tear like vhs was.

Because true hi-fi skipped a generation in the mainstream...people went from LPs and tube-based equipment to noisy early solid state and cassettes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif No wonder CDs caught on so fast...

Things will balance out in time, and the only people to get screwed will be very early adopters that need to have the latest and greatest. But then again, if you have that much disposible income to spend on uncertain technology, perhaps you don't care that you bought the 21st century equivalent to a Laserdisc player.

I know this is somewhat OT, but there was only one type of physical media that actually gained ground in sales for the last several years...and I'll give you a hint, it's not on a shiny little disc //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Its no longer a part of my home theater but I still have it. About 25 laserdiscs too. Nice format but wayyyyyy too expensive to become more than a NICHE market format.

Was it DAT?? Or DCC?? Hmmmmmm......I just can't think of what it was.

Think about how long the uptake for dvds took. Now consider that consumers only needed to purchase a dvd player to take advantage of the new technology. Currently consumers have to purchase expensive televisions plus a high-def player. High def will happen but I predict at least 5 more years until it becomes even remotely main stream (50% adoption). What I'm really hoping for is that holographic discs become extremely prevelant and they release very lax copy protection measures and kick the blu-ray and hd-dvd formats in the ***.
