Now that the new formats are coming out, what do you A/V savvy guys think the future holds for standard definition DVDs.?? I know it will be a while before the Hd-dvd and Bluray war is over so current DVDs are definitely the norm til then. But what about AFTER that war is over and the winner becomes the new BIG thing? I for one think SD-DVDs are fine. I think the new formats are cool but they're ANYTHING but affordable at this point.

Do you think they will all the sudden STOP producing normal DVDs once a hi-res format gets accepted.??

it'll be some time before t hat happens, but i dont think they could stop producing normal res disks all together, th ink of the market they'd be denying, hell, they still make vhs movies for people to buy. the current format will be around for a long time still

If you can sell the same product over and over gain, then a win win situation

for the them. ie if VHS is not sweet enough, then buy DVD. If DVD isn't sweet

anymore for you, you may drool and buy Hi-Def DVD. An endless cycle it seems.

I can smell George Lucas re-releasing Star Wars again on Hi-Def to milk

the cow again because people will drool to have it. Who else can make

6 {SW} films in 30 years and keep raking cash off it ????????????? /lol/

/crazy

Well, there are alot of titles that are being sold on many different formats, not just Lucasfilms. Lucky thing is we do NOT have to buy them if we don't want to.

The biggest differences between the old VHS and current DVD is that VHS tapes wore out with time and play cycles where as DVDs (if cared for properly) will not. So we really won't be a slave to the hi-def formats since our DVDs aren't going to be subject to wear and tear like vhs was.

Well, I think this "war" is going to be just like that of VHS and beta max tapes. Sony likes to have their proprietary formats that are too advanced for even them to understand. It may be better than another, but they just want to collect insane amounts of royalties.

In other words, I'm pretty sure that HD-DVD is going to be the new "standard" in the coming years. Sure, they will still make normal DVDs and whatnot, but most stuff will be put on HD-DVD.

Anyone who answers with the first one has not enjoyed an HD broadcast. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
Absolutely not so. I answered the first one and I've seen many HD broadcasts since my older brother has and Hdtv. The quality of the new formats are impressive but the format war is BS and I'm not putting any money toward one or the other til the war is over.

I'm not so sure about that. Sony is not alone with Bluray like they pretty much were back in the beta vs vhs war. They have alot of backing on this one. More backing than Hd-Dvd has. Not only the backing of hardware mfgs and movie studios but the PS3 will have a Bluray player which will reel in the gamers market to bluray as well.

I'm not saying I KNOW Blue ray will win but they sure have the deck stacked in their favor at this point.

The new formats are in HDTV yet a massive % of the world with tvs are still using SDTVs. DVDs will remain until it becomes vise versa and this is going to take a while and I am talking about long after the Hi-Def format war is over.
