Map data is stored on the HDD, and the connected GPS antenna and speed sensor wire help to pinpoint your vehicle's current location. Once a destination is set, the unit provides turn-by-turn voice guidance through the vehicle's speakers.

Note: If your vehicle isn't equipped with a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) wire, item 105KVPG1 will be required for the navigation functions to work properly.

Map Views: You can select from different map views:

* Heading Up: The map rotates so that you are always displayed heading "upwards." The direction is displayed with a compass icon.

* 3D Map: The map is displayed in a "heading up" mode, and in a three-dimensional view. The direction is displayed with a compass icon.

* North Up: The map view is oriented with north "upwards," like normal paper maps. The direction you are heading to is displayed at the upper right corner of the screen with an icon such as "NE."

Destination Search: You can search for a destination by entering the name, address, or telephone number. An alphanumeric keyboard appears on the screen, allowing you to scroll though the letters to enter the name or number. The available characters are automatically narrowed down as the system searches its database for matches.

Points of Interest: The built-in map database has 13 million points of interest. They can be searched by the following categories: Gas Station, Hotel, Parking, Restaurant, Shopping, Travel, Recreation, Entertainment, Medical, Financial, Automotive, and Community. Some of the categories are divided into sub-categories.

Favorite Points: You can save up to 300 places as favorite points. Favorite points can be put into the following categories: Home, Friend, Relative, Business, Visit, Shopping, Food, Caution, Sightseeing, or Other.

Traffic Message Channel (TMC): Traffic Message Channel is a technology for delivering real-time traffic information to drivers. The traffic information sent by an FM radio station are received and analyzed by the navigation system. The system can inform you of where congestion exists, and how you can detour it. No special radio station has to be tuned in for receiving the traffic information. The traffic service is by subscription only; a three-month free trial subscription is included. Note: The Bypass Traffic feature of the navigation system can be set to manual, auto, or off.

External Device Controls

Bluetooth Compatible: With the optional JVC KS-BTA200 Bluetooth Adapter (item # 105BTA200), this unit allows you to make and receive cellular phone calls (through your Bluetooth enabled phone), or listen to a Bluetooth audio device. You can register up to 5 Bluetooth devices to this unit, however, only one unit of each type can be used at a time. You can store up to 6 phone numbers as presets for one-touch dialing.

Optional Interface Adapter for iPod: The optional KS-PD100 adapter (item # 257KSPD100) allows an iPod digital music player with a dock connector to be hooked up to and controlled by the KD-NX5000. You'll be able to scroll through all your playlists, albums, artists, genres, and composers directly from the head unit. Song titles and other file information show up right on the head unit display. The iPod is also charged while it is connected to the KD-NX5000.

Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

Note: The KS-U58 Aux Input Adapter (which has a 3.5mm miniplug instead of RCA plugs) can also be used for the audio input.
