well i kno theres a cord that looks just like that on the left that one instead of 2 cable to it i had it and had my ipod hooked up whats the difference? mine charged it and played music what else does yours offer?

if you have to ask what it is, then you dont need it. stop post dumping. newer alpines have a direct connect option for the ipod, but before that you had to have this, that goes through the ai-net port on the back of the radio and gives you ipod control through the headunit

no you need the 420 box with this cord to connect to your ipod . it lets you control the ipods music thru the headunit instead of controlling it thru your ipod.

if only you had this a few weeks back i wouldve picked it up .. i had to buy every piece .

like OP said newer models dont need this cord but this unit is for the older alpine models
