haven been wanting to do this for a very long time

I really need help. I been doing some reading already.

Seen some tank setups on craigslist for real cheap and am thinking about getting one. I think i am going to start with a 15 gallon set up first, then work my way up thru the years hopefully. FRESHWATER THAT IS.

This one for sale, comes with everything she said.

What all is needed? Tank, Pump, Gravel, plants (fake for me), Lighting?, the fish. timer for light,

Whats this fishless cycle i read about? Please help and explain what i need to do

Thanks

yes you want a heater for the stuff you're going to want to keep. Set it to about 78 degrees. The undergravel filter is your biological filter that breaks down fish shit (ammonia, nitrite). They can function like this but if you dont change the water its gonna get cloudy. A hang on the back filter will keep the water clearer for longer.

imho a bio filter is a necessity the undergravel filters are simple and help provide oxygen which since its freshwater and your not using a skimmer is a good thing fish need way more oxygen than most people think and a small tank with too many fish and no pump is a sure way to kill them...

Do yourself a favor and start bigger. No one i know has ever downgraded in tank size after starting out. more water is also more stable for first timers. If you can get an AC110 Hang on back (HOB) it is about the best HOB there is, absolute monster of a HOB. I wouldnt waste my time with an under gravel filter (UGF) since other filters do what it does but better and looks better. I use Seachem Prime water conditioner to prepare the tap. Best way ive seen to cycle a tank (and fastest) is to get a big cup of your local pet stores dirty filter water (as in let them squeeze a sponge from one of their HOB into the cup) and it may be enough to get the cycle started along with some helper fish. Zebra danios are very hardy and a personal favorite starter fish. For the love of god look up online how big fish get, dont listen to big name pet store employees. And just for shits here is my 220.

Im guessing the fishless cycle is referring to the 1-2 week period when you first fill the tank that should cycle the water through the filter(s) before putting any fish in the tank. This helps remove chemicals from the water added during the water purification process at the water plant, and helps stabilize PH levels. Id added fish after only a single day of this, but most experts recommend 2 weeks.

You want both an under-gravel filter, and the hanging type. I repeat, both types.
