i knew they've been around, but i was just confused because i clicked on a link to get a free carfax report on the 61 caddy i'm looking at, and it said "please enter a valid vin" and i was reading it right off the picture of the vin, said it wasn't enough numbers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif i should reword my original statement. don't carfax's only go so far back?

That is probably correct. Carfax is probably set up on the current 17 digit VIN system.
