Thats similar to say 12" PVC pipe, but I cant see how a bucket would be strong enough. It seems like it would flex and therefore not be loud.
equal pressure on all points of a cylinder even if it is thin is extremely strong. If you remember TM rush, they used thin cardboard tubes for theirs.

 
cylanders can take a lot of pressure and since it is equal as stated earlier i dont think that the flex ont he walls would be too bad. but the bottom of the bucket would probably flex a lot

I say go for it. Just add some kind of bracing to the bigger panels. Some old home speaker boxes were made of 3/8" mdf. Maybe not even mdf, some...
