For those with HDTV knowledge, help me pick one

Interlaced doesn't work like that ...
Interlaced displays half the picture (every 2nd line) per frame ...

I.E.

Frame 1 = Lines 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc.

Frame 2 = Lines 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc.

Frame 3 = Lines 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc.

Progressive scan displays each frame in its entirety.

When using a television that uses individual pixels (i.e. LCD), a de-interlacer must be used to correctly display the picture. Depending on the quality of the de-interlacer, the image quality may be relatively unaffected or it may be terrible. Either way, you get much better image quality and a better frame rate by using a progressive format with a non-tube display.
yah when i play 360 it looks clearer then the hd channels on cable (720pvs1080i or whatever they are lol)

1080p 60 FTW

ABC/Disney/ESPN - 720p

CBS - 1080i

NBC - 1080i

Fox - 720p

if anyone's watching.

when purchasing a "HD" set, make sure it does 1080i at least. Last year there were a lot of 1280x720 and such sets out there.

Im gettin a 30" samsung crt hdtv for 350.
Ill take pics after I get it.
yah those are pretty sick my 32" crt had better picture quality then my 60 inch sony with non hd channels now give the 60" an hd signal and omg. but my 32 wasnt hd so i dont know if it would help much with the 32

That would be because your 60" screen is 52.3" x 29.4" ... Stretched to fit the screen with a video resolution of 640x480 (480i), you have an effective resolution of 12.2 DPI horizontal and 16.3 DPI vertical (16.3 DPI for both if you don't stretch it) ...
With a 32" fullscreen CRT, the dimensions of the screen are 25.6" x 19.2", resulting in an effective resolution of 25 DPI, which is twice the horizontal resolution of your 60" ...

However, when you use an HD signal with your 60", say 1080i, the effective resolution increases dramatically to 36.7 DPI ...

Of course, compared to your typical 17" LCD monitor @ 1280x1024, that's still an extremely low effective resolution ... The 17" monitor would have an effective resolution of 96.5 DPI ...
does that mean that in general, a typical computer LCD monitor will perform just as well (picture quality-wise) as a giant LCD tv?

Well, different applications ... A computer monitor is right in front of your face, with the average user being between 2 to 3 feet from the screen ... Odds are you'll be about 10 feet from the 60" screen, so even though the effective resolution is 1/3 that of the monitor, you're 3x the distance away, so you won't notice it as much ...
Now, if you were to view the 60" screen from 3 feet away, then yes, you'd definitely notice that the 17" monitor has much finer detail ...
ahhh which explains why giant TVs look more crisp from a certain distance away but look like crap when sitting right in front of it.

General rule of thumb is to watch from a distance of 2 to 3 times the size of your screen.

IMO, I think 1080i looks better than 720p. Both are great but I can actually notice a difference between watching football (example) on CBS rather than Fox.

But it all depends on the source in the first place.

All depends on the TV as well ... Some TVs **** at interlaced, others **** at progressive ...
For the most part, LCD displays do progressive much better than they do interlaced while CRT displays do interlaced much better than they do progressive.
true, true. The DLP's don't care what you send them(just not too much white in a frame, stupid color wheel) including single pixel or whole screen refreshes.
