foam and fiberglass

im considering making a custom fiberglass dash, but unless i spend hundreds of dollars on materials it aint gonna happen. as an alternative, i thought about laying down 2-3 layers of glass for a "floor", then filling in the low vallies with foam, smoothing it out, and glassing on top of the foam to add speaker pods/instrument cluster/etc.

what kind of foam should i use that will not disentagrate or warp with polyester resin? I was thinking of using "great stuff" because i can just spray a whole mess of it into the bottom piece, grate/sand untill i get the desired shape, and then lay the top glass over that. it should be pretty riged and still lightweight right?

Polyester Resin Will melt most foams, You could use Epoxy Resin for those small areas and that will not melt it. However Epoxy resin is VERY PRICY.

People use a good handful of layers of paint to put a layer between the resin and foam (to keep it from warping etc.)...I would give that a shot

Great Stuff will not work no matter which one you use because when it expands it gets very porous after it is finishing expanding. it is not a sandable material either.

^Even after covered in multiple layers of paint?...I would think it would still work

I believe there is a sandable and paintable type of great stuff foam..

Well I believe, regardless of it being 'paintable' or not, with a good amount of paint on it, it should be fine to resin with that layer
