i dont get flac... i listened to a song in flac format then the same song in mp3 format and they sounded exactly the same. isn't flac supposed to be high quality?

foobar is perhaps the best (and most customizable) media player and quite easily converts from one format to another.

armstrong: mp3's method of compression involves removal of artefacts at the upper end of the spectrum, where your ears are much less sensitive. If the proper method is used (ie. ripping in v0) you'll probably have a hard time noticing this immediately.

flac is lossless. meaning they song your listening to is exactly as it is on the original cd it was ripped from. but like punkorama said, the more you compress the more segments you are getting rid of basically. and you dont start dead center when getting rid of them lol. you start at the ends. i would bet unless you have some super crazy hearing or some shit, you will be happy with a nice v0 or 320kbps rip. the latter being a little more wasteful, but none the less you dont really need the flac files unless your trying to archive something. just my opinion.

yeah, i am using oink, still learning it all... i needed to convert them because i couldnt find a way to burn the flac files to CD's, and i couldnt get wmp or zune (i use it to stream to my xbox 360) to recognize the flac files in my library. they would play in a playlist, but that did me no good, need them in the library.

i will look into the vo format from now on.

well i told my self i would always get flac files as well...but when you see a flac torrent that is 500mb and then you see the v0 rip of it that is 100mb, and realize your wont hear a difference you start to think...i can get 5 cd's in v0 for the same amount of space i would use for flac //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Honestly, i see a flac album. And then i think, i'd rather just eat the extra hundred or so megs and have a full image of the CD.

and george, i have just under 20 gigs left on my laptop, but the way i go through music, that probably wont last long hehe. guess i need to find a big external hd. or update my os on my desktop and transfer my musics to there.

could i oink or torrent a new os?

eugenics: well i could understand that, but usually the flacs are like 500% bigger than the v0 rips. as long as its a good rip (flac or v0 and the person used the "detect gap" function of the ripping program) you will be able to burn it and have it play just like the original with no apparent loss of quality. i understand what your saying and i would do that as well if the flacs were like 100-150mb more, but usually they are closer to 4-500mb more from my experience //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

George is right. Flac files are best for archiving. I use to trade bootlegs and shn and now flac files are an absolute must. If one person compresses a show to mp3 and trades it to another who might also compress that show to mp3 you begin to see degradation among the show that is being traded somewhere down the line. The idea among traders is to preserve the integrity of the music so mp3s are despised. For general use though, I bet you can't hear the difference between a good mp3 and a flac file. Just don’t trade music that is not considered lossless quality.
