fiberglassing to hold HU

okay i recently bought a clarion eq to fine tune my system. i thought it would fit right under my head unit if i cut the little box/holder thingy below it. its an 03 s-10. but i cut it off and there a inch gap between the head unit and the eq. also the eq goes in and out with nothing to hold it in. i fear this looks "ghetto" and want to change it cause i hate when people do stuff with nice things that look like shit. so i decide to fiberglass the holder for the head unit and the eq. finally my questions-

1. how many layer should it be?

2. how/what would i screw the head unit and eq into to make both of them stay in place.

3. would the trim ring around the head unit still be able to stay on?

4. would it be smart to mold the cage thingy that hold the head unit in with that plastic surround into the fiberglass? or should i just make sides on the inside of the fberglass to screw the head unit into.

i know this is alot but help with what you can please.

its all judgement. try out a few layers, if you think that will suffice, then its good.

you can use a bolt/but combo to keep the eq in place

yes it could, if you made it right, make sure you glass in the mounting bracket.

I've seem some write ups where people buit a frame out of wood, i k now there is one in here. Could try that to hold it together.

I really need a picture. Cause if your trim rings are plastic, and all your trying to do is fill in gaps. You don't need glass. You need some plastic filler. I would use a couple of backstraps ( the little metal bars that come with the hu)You can get them at parts express for next to nothing. Then use them to mount the hu to the eq. You might have to drill a hole or two in the cage of the hu to access screw holes on the hu. Get that problem fixed first then see if all that is left on the trim panel is a small gap. i streached fleace around the metal cage. and worked off that. the hu slides/locks in and you can put the trim ring on.

also use some back strap to mount things.

just that matt form walmart with the fiberglass resin. id some body work on my vette with it so its strong and easy to use.

Several of these

THere soft enough metal so you can bend them to the shape you need, and it's pretty easy to cut. Parts express sells them as 9" radio back straps .

If you have small gaps to fill , Just make a mdf trim plate to hold the head unit and the eq. Then fill it with liquid plastic. Much easier than trying to glass the thing imho //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

the problem is the gap is in the middle or on the bottom. sooo i have a tough spot to do and my dash is already painted so reay dont feel like doing the liquid plastic thing thanks tho. i plan on glass 3 layer for the face, mold the head unit cage with the mat or fiberglassing sides to screw the hu into, then use the mat and make a panel the screw the eq into, but still unsure on how to keep the eq in there really wanna do it this weekend so dont wanna wait on the back straps. but i while if i have to how would you guys mount it?

WOW ramos, that liquid plastic deal was friggin awesome. I need to do that to my Si, so I can center and down-angle the head unit so it doesn't wash out so much in the sun. I can also mount the remote display for my Valentine one Radar there...... Those head unit kits always look so ghetto anyway....

It's truly hard to say what's the best way without actually seeing what ya got to work with. It just seems as though your going to put yourself through more work. If your dead set on glassing a trim panel for both. I would personally use mdf as it's allready flat to start with then use filler. But If you really want to make it out of glass. I would suggest doing your layup on a piece of glass ( window glass ). You will have a perfectly smooth and flat fiberglass panel. As for holding them in place I still suggest waiting or finding the backstraps locally. They just make it so easy

ya i agree with you there. i may just slide a piece of mdf in the bottm and paint it black lol and screw the eq to that lol. this may have to wait till im out of school this summer to be done. il take pics this weekend and get your guys opinon on the deal.
