right now, i have a limited space to work with and i want to maximize what i have, is it possible to...say use 1/4" or 1/2" mdf and lay the inside with fiberglass? would this be strong enough? and how many inches/layers of fiberglass would i need?

fiberglass itself has very little integrity, that's why you mix it with fleece and matting. It might help with sealing some, but I doubt it'll be much stronger, just more airtight.

i realize that, but it becomes extremely strong and stiff when combined with resin/hardener. I plan to put fiberglass mats on the mdf and used resin to create a permanent seal.

Use 5/8" MDF, brace it very well . You shouldnt have any problems
....as i was saying..i really want to maximize the net volume for the box and 5/8 is just too thick. i can do 3/8" with fiberglass... i really have no space lol
