Explain Physics

Can someone explain to me the physics behind one monster 12 in a SPL ported enclosure easily outdoing 2 10's? I recently got a good deal on a RF 12 inch T2 RMS 1000 watts. So I had a custom enclosure built for it which is a little over 2 cubic feet tuned to 40 hz. This s**t is banging really really hard. I also have 2 10 inch RF T1s (600 watts RMS each) in a enclosure built to specs. It bangs really really hard but not like the 1 T2. The T2 I would say is about 30% louder and harder where bass is concerned. How can 1 monster 12 outdo 2 excellent 10's?

Cone Area + Efficiency. T1 10s are not that efficient and the box is tuned lower than the T2. The T1 10's surround is very big, leaving effective cone area comparable to 2 8's.

T2 box is tuned higher, has more xmax (19 vs 14) and is constructed better than the 10s. Hope this helps.

Vehicle acoustics.

40hz "tuning" in a trunk can actually equate to ~32hz 'in car'

Box may work better in your vehicle. Try having a better box built for the 10's //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Efficiency is the relationship between the acoustic power output vs. the electrical power input. That's where the difference comes from.

SPL boxes mess with the Total Q of the sub+box system. High Q (small box) systems tend to create peaks in frequency response. If the response peaks at +4dB, you'll easily outperform a sealed setup with bigger cone area.

Even setups with low Q can outperform sealed setups, in SPL, transient response, and low freq response. It's all about tuning the box to fit the woofer and you're vehicle. That's why most people advocated ported... because it's the "simplest" alignment that offers significant benefits.
