Does solder corrode? I wonder if and how much soldered speaker wire ends (tinned?) would corrode compared to bare copper?

Can anybody post a link to a table of various wire/electronic corrosion?

And would tining the wire ends with silver solider be any better than regular solder? Looks like the silver content is low in some silver solder.

I would not consider solder to corrode under normal conditions. Bare copper is more likely to corrode, that is one reason why terminals are tin plated to avoid corrosion and subsequently weak solder joints. I work in the automotive industry and we use thin plated brass (brass contains copper) all the time on sensor and actuators and connectors in wiring harnesses. What can happen is that the corrosion could get under the solder and then corrode the carrier material, the copper, in this case and thus create a problem.

You should be able to find the silver content in solder in specifications for these types of solder on the internet.

I would be interested in why you ask this question.

i'm a plumber and no the solder will not corrode. As for the copper, it can oxidize and turn green, but not if it's treated. in your application (speaker's), no worries.

i work with FA18E superhornets in the navy, and we solder copper wire all the time. we even use lead solder. wich was a surprise to me when i read the label.

if the us military uses solder on their terminals in their jets, wich are usually in a salt-air enviornment at sea for 8 months+ ... im sure some tinned wires in your car, inland, are going to last forever.
