EQ and Headunit working together?

I installed my HU and EQ today,

i got this EQ

and the alpine 9885 wich is nice too =]

when i hooked up everything i thought my eq was going to take all the functions away from my HU and was going to control all the gains, bass and highs, volume with my eq etc but i could do it with both HU and EQ is this how it works?
