Enclosure volume for JL 12w6?

I am looking to go as small as efficiently possible with a sealed enclosure for my old school W6. JL recommends 1.25ft. cubed I believe, but the local shop was recommending a volume about half that number.

To those who have experience with this sub, what do you recommend, or have seen?

I have one (12") now in a 1.25 ft^3 sealed box. It's seeing about 300 watts now and it keeps up with my PG RSd65cs, on 140 watts a side, very well. I was planning on upgrading, but this thing sounds a lot better than I remember.

You should shoot an e-mail to JL and see what they recommend.

They recommend 1.25 which is why I was surprised to hear someone say so much less. You have the same setup I'm going with..PG's and the JL 12. What type of amp are you running for the sub?

I have a Kicker KX700.5. It provides 140x2 @ 4ohm for the PG's and 300x1 @ 3ohm for the W6. I am really happy with this setup. I thought the JL was going to be to weak to keep up with the PG's on 140w a side, especially since the sub has to be run at 3ohms (300 watts @ 3ohm) and not using the full 420 @ 2ohm that the amp can provide, but on certain songs I have to crank the bass down just to hear the PG's.

How much power do you plan on throwing at yours?

About 300...Im going to have to see what I can do for a box in the morning. I want something as small as possible.

I'd go with what "azbass" said and try ~ 1 cube and lots of polyfill. You could try fiberglass if your trying to maximize trunk space.

"trunk" space really isn't my problem, becasue I drive a 4runner. I'm just want to keep things low-profile and leave as much trunk space as possible. Something along these lines...I'm assuming these are 10's...

it's possible that JL makes one of those stealthboxes for the 4runner... im too lazy to look it up //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

you could also search some 4runner forums and see if anybody makes enclosures like that or if there are any in the classifieds.

I didn't like the w6v1 (AE edition actually) in an enclosure smaller than 1 cube. In the 1 cube enclosure, it was lacking in the 25-35hz region and that got even worse when I tried a .75 enclosure. Any smaller and the upper frequency lump just gets annoying to me.

Sorry to thread jack, but did you ever use that sub in a ported enclosure(s)? I have been trying to decide if I should go ported, but I don't want to compromise sound quality.

They do make a stealthbox, but I have no interest in paying $500 for an enclosure with a 10" sub in it when I have a bunch of 12's sitting around waiting to be used.

There are no "custom" enclosures being made for 4runners regardless of how simple on any forums. I'm going to see what kind of volume I can get out of an enclosure similar to the first one I showed.

I hear you on that.

I figured I'd give it a shot - I have been on a couple of forums that has a member who produce vehicle specific enclosures.

Unfortunately there is no market for such a thing...maybe I should make one and put it out there to gauge some interest.
