Enclosure not built to specs

I have always built my enclosures to the specs recommended by the manufacturer. They always sound good and I have never had complaints. However, up until recently I have been worried about the space in my trunk, mainly over the spare tire. The box I have now is pretty heavy and I really don't think I would be able to lift it by myself in case of an emergency. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with building boxes that are not necessarily up to manufacturer specs, specifically smaller. I know I can go sealed but I love the way my ported box sounds. I would just like to compact it.

My subs require 1.25 cubes per sub tuned too 36 hz. They each displace .157 cubic ft. Any help if greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Yeah, I know the sealed enclosure would be small. I just want that to be my last resort. I know alot of people use really compact boxes for competitions, I just want to know what are some of the theories/formulas behind them.
