Embarrassed to ask but, whats "going active" mean?

Hey audioholic, what processor do you use? I'm having a heck of a time finding a processor with enough crossover adjustments. My head unit is just not capable of going active and I don't know whether to get a new HU or if it's possible to do with a external crossover/processor.

Most component sets crossovers will be sufficient enough for you I'd say. Either that, or get a decent deck with the stuff built in.

The whole point is I want to go active, NOT remain passive. I can either get a new HU or get an external active crossover.

Alpine pxa-h701. My h/u is an IVA-D310 (which ups just delivered yesterday).
