Efficiency or Power?

The efficiency of a woofer system is directly proportional to its cabinet volume and the cube of its cutoff frequency.

summary = to reproduce ever lower frequencies at the same output level you need an extremely large box

my understanding on the law

Efficiency, low frequency extension, small enclosure size...... Hoffman's Iron Law basically states you can only have 2 out of the 3.

Decrease enclosure size, and power must increase to keep LFE the same. For example.

I'm a local kid you could say. My speakers ain't stock, and they're amped. You can't go any other way.
I just don't get it. How in good faith can a so called "custom shop" recommend 1,000 watts of subwoofer power without attempting to balance the sound out? I understand trying to make a buck, but I see way too many youngsters putting emphasis on their subwoofer and not putting enough on those frequencies above 80 Hz.

Call me old school, but I just don't get it.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

That said, I miss my old systems that sounded good and got real loud with lower RMS power. Unfortunately, the cost of it was less usable trunk space. A friend of mine still has his old Savard 12" bandpass sub. I think the box is somewhere at the 7.5 cubic foot mark (ETA for a SINGLE 12" sub). Years ago he borrowed one of my Punch 150s and it sounded like his sunfire vert was going to shake itself apart.

IIRC, my two Kicker comp 10s from back in the day required 1.5 cubic feet per 10 sealed. I forgot what ported was, but it was bigger! I guess that is the shift from the good old days to now.

Old days: speakers were more efficient and required larger enclosures but finding high power amps was impossible.

Now a days: speakers are less efficient and require less space, but high power amps are the land o plenty. Plus, running a single subwoofer doesn't mean that you have to fill up 7.5 cubic feet of your 13 cubic foot trunk to get LOUD sound.

I mean, how on earth can a shop talk someone into doing a 1,000 watt sub stage without upgrading everything else to match? Either the customers are stupid or the sales associates are that good:laugh:
I was referring to you responding to Buck

I don't know why it was funny, but it was

There are alot of reasons why the 'sub stage' tends to get the most attention in car audio systems. We've discussed it many times before here. The shops are merely attempting to follow the trend. Not saying its right of them to do so, just saying they are doing it for business reasons.

I have noticed quite a few people wanting to be "loud" and then going directly to the sub department. They do not care for anything but bass. If it can drown out your mids, then it is better and if you can hear the tweeter it is O.K.

Thanks to dman4486, I had to clean Dr. Pepper off of my LCD.... Oddly, I don't even know why I am laughing my *** off right now at "Make a buck" but I find it amusing.... I need to start getting more than 3 hours of sleep per night.

How can they? Because the average high school hero these days could care less about how loud his highs or mids are...

You don't see people pulling into the mall parking lot blaring their horn loaded tweeters, you see them bumpin their 15'' Xploding octogon subwoofer off their Xplosive 2000 watt MAX amp.

It's tragic, sound quality is not important to the kids that custom shops are getting a hold of. It's all about who has more type ARGGGG bass.

Put it this way, the bass junkies that have listened to my car have always had a baffled look on their face....and then say something like "this sounds weird" and then look down under the dash for the sub(s). This isn't necessarly a testament to the install as it is not knowing any better and what they've come to expect in-car bass to sound like.

I lol'd.....

OMG, I just got it... Dr pepper through the nose doesn't feel good:laugh:

My teacher just looked at me weird. But I can't explain how many people, in high school at least, only have subs. No amped speakers at all. They turn it up really loud and it sounds like *** //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif. Then I get mad inside and want to slap them to tell them that it sounds like *** but I just keep it to myself and say it sounds good.

I couldn't live life without my Boston setup. I love them. They sound so good.
