Eclipse or Shiva?

Hey guys,

Right now, I have a good (IMHO) sounding system that i'm quite happy with. I've got Alpine CDA 9811, four Infinity 5002i, one Infinty 310a, and a 10" infinity 1030w. I very much like the way it sounds.

My concern is this: I am worried that the single voice coil sub is not going to last. I have heard many stories of SVC subs going south at around 3 months of use. I don't listen to my music at ear-bleeding levels, infact, you can barely hear the music outside the car.

So, I was looking at DVC subwoofers. Specifically, ones with good musical qualities. My local dealer suggested I go with an Eclipse 10". I can't rememeber which one exactly, but it costs $199 CDN, and would be a (parallel) 2ohm load. But, I just checked out the Shiva on the internet, and one can be had for $149 CDN. I've known about the shiva for about 5 years, and its always been a highly regarded sub. I'm not sure what the impedance of the shiva is when its wired in parallel, but i'm pretty sure its not 2ohm.

The amp is 2ohm stable, 115w at 4ohm, and 311w at 2ohm, so I think it would be best to go to a 2ohm setup, but I just don't know if the eclipse is worth the extra money.

Thanks very much for your time guys, any opinions are welcome!

Will.

im pretty sure for the shiva is dual four.....or can be made that if asked..i would get the shiva before eclipse as the eclipse hes tryna sell is prolly the 87xxx series....they were good subs but by far not new to the market or anything. get the shiva. i dont think aluminums go that cheap ANYWHERE

shivas are dual 8-ohm. i know that upgrading the tempests from dual 8-ohm to dual 4-ohm is like an extra $125 for whatever reason.....so you'd have to look into that

What you heard was wrong. SVC subs don't just automatically break after 3 months just because they have 1 vc. If one vc of a dvc sub blows, then the sub is still blown, so it doesn't matter how many coils the sub has. If you like how the way your sub sounds, then keep it. No need to fix something that isnt broken.

Very true, i'm not neccecerily expecting the infinity to blow after 3 months because its a SVC, moreso because its the bottom of the infinity line.

Right now I think i'm going for the shiva. I've been looking at them for years //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/inlove.gif.6846f78f06b405429ef3a00129788a2a.gif , and never had an excuse to get one. I think i'll got with my gut. I guess my next question would be:

"How much better will the shiva sound than the 1030w with the same amp?"

Thanks!

Unless you've been bitten with the upgrade bug I would stay with what you have. If you're happy with it, that's all that matters.

But if you are going to upgrade the Shiva is an awesome sub. I've got two in about 1.3 cf and to me they sound awesome. I would imagine that the Shiva will be a considerable step up in SQ and SPL, but then again I've never heard your sub.

I would take the Shiva over the Eclipse though

Yeah, its definelty the stupid upgrade bug.

Oh, and the fact that I can get the shiva for less than i'm going to get back from returning the 1030w! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
