It allows you to run a balanced line (16v) from the HU to where your amps are going to be located and then converts it to an unbalanced (10v) signal for your amps that do not accept a balanced signal.

This deserves a bump, just for being an awesome deal. I remember the 8053 was my 'dream' deck back when I first got in to car audio, but I ended up settling on the 5423.
