dvc wiring problems.

ok. i need some help... i bought a older rockford fosgate punch 12. it's dual voice coil...but i'm having some problems with it. it has + and - scratched into the metal where the terminals come out, 2 on each side of the sub. i'm assuming each set of two is each voice coil. the correct way to wire would be

amp +-----------vc1+ ----- vc1- --------vc2+ ------vc2- -----amp -

right?

the speaker is 4 ohms, and i have a alpine mrv 1000 and i'm not really sure on the specs on it, but right now i have it bridged, cause it's a 2 channel. anyway...my problem is, i got it and one voice coil wasn't hooked up, just the wires coming out of the speaker, not wired to a terminal or anything, so i went by the "scratches" ( + and - ) on it and wired like above, assuming each side is the different voice coil. i hooked it up, and it didn't work. i want to know a. what is the most efficient way of wiring this set up, to get the most power, without blowing anything. and most importantly, have it work.

i tested the sub with an ohm meter....it flows on one side, but not on the other, like if i just test from + to - the one side has very low resistance, and the other side has infinite resistance

what resistance did that working side show?

u said the sub is 4ohms...is that dual 4 or just one of the sides reads 4ohms?

have u tried hooking up each coil separately just to test them?

the working side read approx 7 ohms. i had the one side hooked up...the working side, and it would run for a few seconds at full volume, then cut out...then when i turned it down, it would come back on, as if it were heating up and cooling down. i've never had the other side hooked up, by itself.

edit: the sub says dual 4 ohm. that's all i know.

it should have read about 4ohms if its dual 4 ohm sub. when u tested it and got the 7ohm reading, did u have the sub wired up like in the diagram u posted

amp +-----------vc1+ ----- vc1- --------vc2+ ------vc2- -----amp -

?

and when u say it cut off, did the amp turn off? did a red (protection) light go on? or did the sub just stop playing?

it was wired like that when i tested it. i tested right at the wires coming out of the cone. the amp didn't turn off, and i didn't see a red light...i'm not even sure if my amp has a protection mode.
