hello all - i have a dvc sub and a 2 channel brigable amp and i was wondering what people's opinions on how to connect the two are.

should i connect one coil to each channel, bridge the two channels and hook them to the coils in series, or bridge the two and hook them to the coils in paralel?

Independance per coil is 4 Ohms on the DVC Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1D sub

and it says in the amp's booklet...

37.5 watts x 2 into a 4 Ohm load with less than 0.1% Thd+N

75 watts x2 into a 2 Ohm load with less than 0.1% Thd+N

150 watts briged into a 4 Ohm load with less than 0.1% Thd+N

and then it goes on to the Dynamic ratings

thanks for the help -

I had the same dilema as you. wire them in parrallel he is correct. You want to connect the positives to the positives and the negatives to the negatives. This will yeild the 75 x 2 @ 2ohms.....good luck!!!

Am I correct in thinking you have one 12" ? If so, your only going to be able to get 75w out of the amp 37.5w x 2 4ohm. Each coil on it's own channe. What kind of amp is it ? If you parallel the coils you will get a 2ohm load. Which according to your amp specifications, is too low. If you wire the coils in series you will get an 8ohm load. Which means you would end up with about the same 75w. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

That Perfect should handle 150 watts on a single coil easily. I would bridge the amp and run it into either of the two coils, and leave the other coil disconnected. You'll get the full 150 watts the amp can deliver.

I know this'll raise some eyebrows around here, but that IS what makes DVC subs so versatile.

Yes 75 x 2 is 150 but In the specs he listed. The amp is rated at 75 x 2 at 2ohm. Not trying to sound like a smart a$$ or anything. But how do you go about getting two 2ohm loads with one 4ohm dvc sub ? If you parallel the coils you get a 2ohm load. But only one. So you still only get 75w.

Maylar did suggest the only way I know of to get 150w from the amp. You can use just one coil. It won't hurt anything. Just remember the power handling is cut in half. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I would never leave one coil unwired, the speakers were not made to be ran like that, so I wouldnt run them like that. What do thos subs RMS? Maybe try to get another sub and run them both in parrellel and there ya go. Unless that amp is stable with less than 2 ohms I THINK that is the way you could get the most out of that amp.

Ok so there's very mixed opinions on hooking up the DVC sub. here are the Sub/amp stats again:

Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1D Woofer

Sensitivity (2.83V @ 1m) : 96 dB (IN-CAR @ 40 Hz)

Power Handling: 350w rms (1,400w Peak)

Frequency Response: 18 ~ 150 Hz

Nominal Independance: 4 Ohms (per coil)

MTX Audio Thunder 6152 Amplifier

37.5 watts x 2 into a 4 Ohm load with less than 0.1% Thd+N

75 watts x2 into a 2 Ohm load with less than 0.1% Thd+N

150 watts briged into a 4 Ohm load with less than 0.1% Thd+N

now if i cant safely hook these up i might have enough budget left to buy a new amp and/or sub if it comes down to that, what should i get so that these nice expensive parts work seemlessly together?

I asked the Infinity Tech Support about using a Perfect 12.1 on only one VC and they said don't do it. Only reason given is "The unpowered coil will be dead weight". OK. But they didn't say it'd damage anything.

The Kicker's I put in my kid's truck said it was OK, but cut the power rating in half. Been running that way for months with no ill effects.

So I guess the jury's still out. Personally, I'd do it. The Perfect is rated 350 watts so with only 150 you'd be under half the rating.

An alternative is to put the sub in parallel (2 ohms) and run the amp bridged anyway. Some amps (like Rockfords) will survive that OK. Some won't.

Best solution is a 300 watt amp that's stable to 2 ohms.

Your choice.

But it's not actually dead weight. It can serve a purpose...

Be mindful, if you run a single coil on the woofer, TERMINATE the other one to itself. (IE, short it out). You will lose sensitivity from the situation, but the woofer parameters will remain the same as if you were driving both coils. If you leave one coil open, your Qtc will rise, and the box may seem boomy, even though you aligned it in an "audiophile" (ala butterworth) alignment.

You can also wire a potentiometer along that coil, and use it for a on the fly, dial in Q...

Cut power handling by about 60% is a better figure, because you may not have full excursion potential from just one coil, and the other, sitting as it is, will help retain heat against the one that is running. Most of your cooling comes from the vented pole piece moving air out of it, so that excursion comes in handy more than just for looks... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
