dual lovers... (sigh)

I swear 90% of the members don't read whole threads just skim the parts that say: x Subwoofer & x Power. He said this guy in question said his 3 Duals were louder than his 18" APXX on 5k, he never once said the guy with duals was running 5k... Then again no hate or direction to Jason just noticing a lot of members on here don't read or don't know how to, sad really...
It's called automatic spell check bruh.

I work at a local shop, and I have had "that guy" show up talking trash time and time again.

99 times out of 100, I just brush them off and act friendly (you always stand a chance of creating a paying customer by being friendly to them, no matter how brainwashed they may be). I try to help them expel their ignorance of car audio by offering simple comparisons of what 'they' think is 'loud' vs what 'is loud'.

As a whole, most customers are stuck on the ideas that their friends told them. They 'know' what a car should sound like. And they 'know' that it should 'beat'.

Usually, by simply stepping out to our shop's parking lot and demoing a vehicle...I totally change the customer's idea of a quality car audio system.

For instance, right now I usually demo my '04 Avalanche daily driver w/ 2-DD3515 6th order on 2 DDM2a (151+ 38hz) w/ DD A-series comps running active powered by a DDC4a from my Eclipse 7200mkII HU. That usually shuts up 99% of "those customers".

And most of the time, after this system blows their (average-joe) mind...they return to the shop w/ me and begin to talk about pricing to get their vehicle on par w/ what they just heard.

But, there is still that group that just won't let things be.

For instance, back when I had my old 155dB+ '98 silverado, some guys came in that claimed 'their boy' could pull up to our shop and blow out all our windows.

(not joking here, that is what they said)

They (4 of them) where in the shop just talking trash, literately running customers out of the shop for almost an hour while we tried to talk some since into them. (they where loud and obnoxious). I am usually VERY professional about talking business, but one of them (the 'leader') said that his 'boy' that could blow all the glass out of our shop could be here in 10mins...and he had $100 on it that 'his boy' could blow out shop's glass out w/ his system no problem.

Well, me and my co-worker pretty much snapped (unprofessional, yes, I know). But, we said OK...call it $1000.

Little did they know, 'their boy' that had the loudest system they had ever heard on the streets was actually a guy that frequented the local audio competitions that we hosted....lol. And I KNEW that his system only metered in the mid 140's.

So, the leader of the group called him and told him he could easily win $1000 just by showing up, he had the call on speaker-phone. Henry (the loud vehicle owner), asked who had made the bet. After Henry heard that it was our shop, all he would say was "man, they have me, forget it".

It was over after that. The little group left, tails tucked, and had nothing to say.

Long story short. 2 of the 4 guys in that group came back to our shop afterwards and had us build their vehicle's audio systems.

And for the $ they spent vs other local quotes, they couldn't have been happier...lmao.

EDIT:

Moral of the story.

Even though you get "that guy" talking trash, stick w/ what you know is right. Show the public/customers what you can do and let them judge you on that alone...not the hype and BS.

i like your story, and its 100% true, about how people think things are vs. reality.

Thank you.

You have to always greet a customer w/ the mentality that they are RIGHT. But on the occasion that your see they are obviously wrong, you must attempt (as graciously as possible without loosing your cool) to steer them in the right direction. (regardless of what their friends say they need)

Offer them any and all possibilities within their budget. Listen to what they say they want, then try to explain the realities of 12v audio. Let the customer hear multiple demo speakers and nail down their idea of 'good' sound. Piece the system together based on their preferences.

As we all know, SQ is VERY dependent on the individual. And sadly, the average joe usually wants to have screaming highs and booming lows...w/ little or no mid-range //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

But, when the customer is happy...and I know that the system is being driven withing its limits...everyone is happy.

I do what I can to help the customer, but what they want and what they hear is still up to them.

And to extend the little story from my earlier post. The 2 guys that came back after this little incident have become repeat customers and have refereed others to us //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yeah, great points here, and it works out a free advertisement. and its true about the screaming highs, and brown note lows. everybody wants that, for under $400 with install, most people don't realize how much goes into each individual system.
