dual 4 ohm

It means you have 2 ways you can wire it. If you hook them up in parallel, you will have a 2 ohm load. If you hook them in series, you have a 8 ohm load.

i have a ma audio 10 sub that says dual 4ohm what is this?
What this means is that the subwoofer you have has two voice coils and each one has a nominal impedence of 4 Ohms.
That gives you the option of wiring in parallel to achieve a 2 Ohm nominal load or you can wire in series to get an 8 Ohm nominal load.

See here for diagrams of what I am talking about.

The only real advantage to having a DVC (dual voice coil) subwoofer over an SVC (single voice coil) sub is wiring flexibility.

Example: Brand 'X' amplifier outputs 200w @ a 4 Ohm load but the output increases to 350 if it shown a 2 Ohm load. With a single voice coil 4 Ohm subwoofer you'll only be able to get the 200 watt output from it. But with a DVC 4 Ohm sub you can wire in parallel to 2 Ohms and get 350 watts out of the amp.

can you hook them up together or are they there for just options you pick the side you want.
Not only can you hook them up together but you need to hook them up together (whether it be in parallel or in series) Only using one voice coil rather than both will lead to premature driver failure.

i have an alpine 450 5ch. amp. 50x4+200x1 and from what ive read and heard these are not 2ohm stable. so the best thing would be to wire it to 8ohms.

thanks

Only if the sub would perform optimally with 100w.....which is doubtful.

Sounds like it's either time to buy a new sub, or buy another amp to power the sub.
