DSL modem question ** need help quick **

Just got a new modem for my dsl because my last modem had a bad ethernet cable, so i couldnt hook up my wireless router.. Anywho, its just a cheaper one from best buy, .. An actiontec dsl modem, but what i was wondering is there anything i have to do or setup with this or can i just plug it in and go>??

plug and go. at least the one i got from qwest was. the actiontec i have is wireless also. if your plugging it in with the usb or ethernet it was plug and go, but i had to set it up to run wireless.

All the setup should be done through your router setup page if you have a router, or through your computer if you dont. Assuming it is anything like my modem.

As I'll assume you bought it new since it came from Best Buy I'd suggest reading the manual, maybe?

to set up my wireless i think i typed in 198.0.0.1 in my address bar. that took me to the setup page.

With linksys it is 198.168.1.1 and i think most others are that.

i was wrong on the actiontec. it's 192.168.0.1

thanks for the replies.. Obviously im tryin to get replies b4 i try anything because i wont be able to do anything once i disconnect my current modem.. And to whoever posted about the manual .. Its a little fold out manual but it has a utilities cd, but at the bottom it says its not an installation cd.. And that means what? Sorry , yes i am computer stupid

Thats what worries me.. this modem that i picked up at BB says its tested and approved by quest and even gives you step by step directions ( with quest ) but i have a service through a company called centurytel which does not aparently have the same kind of service as quest and will not work.. Sorry for all the q's and being a computer nOOb but i just dont want to mess anything up.. Do i need to no any passwords or security codes ?

btw this is not my computer thats why im asking

do you know what kind of service century tell has?

like aDSL (pppoa or pppoe), sDSL, or raDSL? DSL modems aren't interchangeable between different types of services like that.

not entirely true either. the manual that comes with it will tell you the exact address to type in

1. find out the ip address and the type of interface (http/telnet/etc.)

2. just read the **** manual...you probably just need to set up the modem & enter in your account details for your ISP (username & pass)...PPPoE session parameters
