Drunk Drivers

Doing an essay on how common of a thing drinking and driving still is and some other facts. I was asked to get people's opinions on how common they believe it really is... Because stats from what police have pulled over and arrested and so on obviously isn't every drunk driver...

How common of a thing is drinking and driving that you know of?

i say on the low end the drinking driving laws are too strict, as in 2 beers or so can possibly get you a very expensive ticket. but i also think on the high end, driving completely shit faced to the point you could ****ing kill someone, i think in that area the law is not strict enough, those people should get serious prison time.

I have just started my research and plan to research the law as well, but I believe where I live, that at a certain point of intoxication, we have our license suspended for 24 hours without a ticket (fine) or arrest... but after crossing the legal limit, even if it is just barely or extremly bad, we get the same punishment of a suspended license, fine (over $1000) and a criminal record...

Also, kind of sad story, a friend of mine, who was a great student and very smart had been out drinking, decided to drive home, got arrested and after being released the next morning, decided to kill himself. Kind of sad how many negative things can come out of this, we usually think of the drunk person killing others with an accident...

When I got to college, I was surprisingly alarmed just how many people drink and drive.

That was the main thing my parents always hammered into my mind. "It's ok if you drink, just don't drive. Call us if you really need to."

If you wanna to piss off your teacher, there is a paper floating around out there about the economic impact of driving drunk. He concludes if a person paid a fee of xx.yy, they should be allowed to drink and drive, as they would pay out their costs to society.

The argument depends on whether or not you feel you can assign a value to a human life. For example, if a drunk driver killed you mom, would you sue in civil court for anything above and beyond medical bills? If so, you are assigning monetary value to human life....and therefore it the financial risks can be mitigated.
