Down firing Subwoofer

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, but not car audio. I've been collecting gear for years and have started my install. Just wanted some feedback on what I have planned. I have a 1966 Buick Special (4 door) that I've converted into a 2 door convertible (roof gone, doors welded and smoothed over, and roll cage installed). It's going to have just 2 front seats, and the rear seat will be where the sub is located.

I have an Eclipse titanium 15", which will be driven by the original XI series Hifonics Colossus. The Sub will be positioned in the centre rear seat, in a dual ported box firing downward. It will be suspended (within its enclosure) about 6" above a solid Granite surface plate (used by engineers) measuring 24"L x 18"W x 4" thick. This will form what I dub the 'bass chute'.

Because it's an open roof car, I thought this was an interesting way of mounting things in order to get some ground shaking results.

I'll have 2 JBL 8" subs in the old 'vent' position (kick panels) - 2 sets of 6.5" focal components in the doors.

The 8's will run off the Hifonics XI Zeus, and the components off a second Zeus.

I have an extra battery under the hood and 6 batteries under the rear deck (totaling 7) on a 10 farad cap bank, with a high output alternator on the 350Ci engine. (seperate alternator and battery in stock position for the car electronics)

All this and I can still fit a body in the trunk!!!

Has anyone done or heard of anything like this? (mostly the sub configuration)

Should work fine firing down into just some MDF or plywood. IMO downfiring is generally good performing.

I'm a big fan of overkill on batteries, but you do need to keep an eye on them. I like to take them all out once a year and have each load tested.

Also post up some pics when you get this build going.

I'm going to try to post some pictures, just figuring this **** out. Bare with me, I'm a newbie.

If there's one thing I've learned, and I saw someone else say the same thing...you can never have 'too many' batteries.

I've already lowered, and put new shocks/springs in this car, and put air helper springs in the rear to allow up to an extra 1000lbs...so we're still safe, although with the 1" MDF, 160lb Granite block and batteries, plus equipment will be pushing it.

I've had the 2 Zeus amps on 2 batteries before, and it wasn't enough. These are the original, made in America Zeus amps with 2 70Amp fuses each! They're power hungy for sure. Never had the Colossus in the mix before, but it's got 2 sets of power and ground terminals so something tells me it's hungry too.

I'll be slowly piecing this thing together over the next few months, but I have all the pieces of the puzzle ready to go. Starting to create my flat surfaces now. Taking a break from body work.

As a little bit of history, I've had the Eclipse sub powered by one Zeus and one set of components powered by the other Zeus. Back in the day I had a Honda CRX with the sub inverted in the back window, firing into a built-in dual ported 5.3 cuft box doing 148.6db at 32Hz in an more of an SQ designed enclosure...

2 Batteries, no Caps, original alternator...she had quite a whistle if I played it full volume too much...haha

Good advice on battery maintenance hispls, I plan on wiring in a quick connect for an AC charger for it's downtime. This project will be a garage baby. No rain, always heated, dry storage...she's been slow progress, but it's my baby.

For most applications, 1 woofer is more than enough. This thing will handle 2000watts RMS, and blow the doors off 3 12's most of the time...if box design is correct, you don't need more. Gives much more air space to play with too. Besides, with 1200 Watts this one sub did 148db...should be just fine.

Hey guys, I've put a few pics up if you look at my profile and all photos. Get an idea of the layout if interested. Thanks for your comments!
thanks for that! i know you put time into uploading them on here, but they usually get downsized and look terrible, if you go to imgur.com and upload your pictures, then find the direct link to the image (right click, copy image location) and paste it into the image option here (use yourimgurimg.com/wwgw[\IMG]) it'll look much better

does it give full resolution and embed the images
I uploaded pics with ease
