dog

we had a siberian growing up. she was an amazing dog. worked very well with all three of us children. she did just fine with the 90+ summers but you couldn't get her to come inside during the winter she loved burrowing into the snow and laying in it.

sure did shed a lot though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

So true, and they are difficult to train unless you spend 12 hours + everyday with them. I'll second the Shepherd, I have one and he's super smart, very loyal, protective and great with kids. If you're a home owner I'd check with them first, certain breeds they will not insure or make you carry additional insurance (rider).

dont get me wrong, they are great dogs, just tend to be a bit mischevious(sp*)/destructive if they get bored.

i've owned both a husky and a malamute, definatly dont recomend a malamute for the in experienced handler, they are very high energy dogs, highly intelligent, and easily bored. They definatly like the cooler weather, huskies are very similar. i would suggest doing some research on other breeds for your son first.
One of my friends in high school bought a Husky. They left him for a day in their house and he tore up about 3k worth of crap. Destroyed their leather furniture, ate a 5x3 hole in the sheetrock and even chewed on the freakin tv. They are very smart dogs, but man make sure you keep them entertained.

Get a pit bull from a good blood line. They are exellant with small dogs, and children. Hyper, and love to play, but excellant dogs. Extremely loyal, and protective. Do some research, and get familiar with the breed.

Check out http://www.realpitbull.com/ on the left side under the ownership section. i read alot of this before i bought mine.

i just don't want to get one of those little yippy piss *** dogs. my parents have two chows and they are actually good around my kids. I just want a kick *** dog that would protect them if i have to get called at night for work or if i have to go out of state for a disaster.

I'd suggest doing more research into german shepards.Very loyal and protective.

My chow was too unpredictable, and after having a couple friends with them, I wouldn't trust them alone with children.

akita's are not necessarily good with children
Like any animal it depends on how they are raised but your correct. I have an 11year old Akita and they take a lot of work. People spend time with my dog (loves people and is a fantastic dog) and they say they want an Akita. I try to discourage them because they have no idea of the 100's of hours that it has taken to get hit to that point. I have mine around kids quite a bit and have never had issues but I've heard the horror stories.

My brother had a husky (they lost her earlier this year...she was 14). Husky, Malamute, Akita all spits breeds have similar tempermant. They take alot of work. If you expect to have an outdoor dog that you aren't going to spend a lot of with them...bad idea. They will beome aggressive and destructive. Don't plan on letting them run off lead. You can get them to behave off lead but again, it will take you dozens of hours. Both my bro and I were never able to just let our dogs "run"....they get selective hearing.

Another one is that they view any animal smaller than them as prey and will usually try and kill it (through the years I've found everything from squirels and cats to possums dead on the back porch. My bro's husky had a thing for ground hogs). If it is an animal that they have been raised with you'll be OK but they are animal aggressive and dominate. They will typically want to fight other dogs for dominance.

As far as the heat goes I wouldn't worry about it as long as you allow them in the house. I typically hits 110-115 here during the summer and we have never had any issues.

Don't get me wrong, they all can be great dogs and I wouldn't trade my furry buddy for anything but be prepared to do a lot of work and spend a lot of time working with them. Go pick up a copy of "Dogs for Dummies" and read about selecting the right breed for you.

me personally i'd get a great dane and/or staffordshire bull terrier.

Dane's are awesome family dogs. The only draw backs is that the larger the dog the larger the vet bills and they have a relatively short life span. That and you'll have to buy the largest bed you can find.
