Does the size of a vent really matter?

Does port size matter if you box size is what is suppose to be? I have an eclipse sub I'm gonna make an enclosure for and for this one I wanna try it vented. according to my calculations it needs to be 36x12x19 at 3.7cuft. I'm planning on having one of those vents where there is like a slit on the side of the box. But I need some advice on if I'm on the right track of not.

#1. Are these vented boxes usually the best for everyday listening and quality?

#2. Does the sub always have to be far away from the vented wall and still on the same wall?

#3 Say my vent will be 1 inch thick (is that good or bad) Do I just add 1 inch plus the thickness of the wood I'll be using to accomadate for the vent. For example: using 3/4"MDF and the box is 36" would making it 37 and 3/4" be ideal?

Any info would be helpful, its winter time and the snow is forcing me to stay home with not to many things to do.

Yes the size of the vent is critical to the frequency response of a subwoofer. Get it wrong and you will have a shitty sounding box.
