does a small hole in the foam hurt anything?

So today my friend slipped with the screw driver and put a hole/slit into my subwoofer. It is in the foam that goes around and kinda sticks out. I was wondering if this will affect my subwoofer at all. Also if it is how can i fix it? please help me out. Thanks

The foam is part of the suspension of the woofers cone. It centers the cone, and keeps it from moving too far one way or the other. A small hole does not affect either of these two things.

It does however effect the air-tight qualities of the woofer. Normally, the air in front of the cone and behind the cone are seperated by an enclosure and the cone. With a hole, the pressure from either side can attempt to equalize. This results in poor bass and irregular response from the enclosure if the hole is large enough. Its best to seal it up in order to prevent any problems- and to keep the hole from growing larger.

how do you suggest the seal it up? I was thinking dabbing some black silicone on there would do the job?
Perfect- just let the silicone fully dry before placing the sub in an enclosure. Although not likely, some glues and foams can be eaten by the silicone outgas.

well.. it's a pretty simple answer... almost common sense... it's fine... I know that some this just doesnt make sense if you don't know about it...

that foam/rubber surround is what holds the woofer cone to the basket to keep the subwoofer from just flopping about, plus it keep the cone straight to prevent coil rub and it can add to the punch of a sub

I pulled the same bonehead manuever on my Kicker C-10 in the mid-90's. I always wrap my free hand around the area now so the screwdriver head can't go anywhere if it slips.

I made sure the tear was flush with the rest of the surround and then applied some black silicone to back of the tear. I let it dry fully and it was as good as new. When viewed from the front you would've been hard-pressed to see it. I still have the sub lying around and the silicone is still holding like a champ.
