Do Port tubes work?

To make an enclosure ported it has to be completely re-designed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

unless properly calculated you would simply have a large box with a hole in it
Isn't this truly what all ported boxes are. They were all a sealed box till you cut a hole and put a port board/port tube in it.

As long as the box has the appropriate air space for a ported box and you put the correct length port tube in it than yes it will work. But the sealed box must have enough air space. So a .5ft3 sealed wouldn't work very well. But if you had a larger sealed box and the correct port length for that airspace it should work. So basically what I am saying is if the sub requires a 2-5ft3 box for a ported box as long as you had a sealed box that was 2-5ft3 and then put in the correct port it would work

Not exactly, you still have to figure port displacement. Also most important of all, theres no such thing as a "universal" enclosure, if you want one of those go to the flea market and get yourself one of those "cool plexi-window bandpass things" for $20.

The only way it would really work is to take a sealed enclosure that is the size you need for the driver, and putting an external port on it that is of the proper size for sufficient tuning.

Just design and build one, or have someone do it for you.

Ported enclosure size is generally double that of a sub's sealed requirement. So unless the sealed box is grossly wrong, to the point it would sound terrible and allow the speaker to bottom out very easily, there's no way its big enough to have adequate ported volume requirements.

edited for accuracy

That is along the lines of what I am saying. As long as the sealed box{I don't exactly mean the one he has in his car at the moment} has the correct air space i.e. the proper space after displacement of driver and said port. What I am saying is IF the box WOULD be correct for a ported box for that particular sub then yes putting the CORRECT length port in the box would work. But as it has been stated it would be better to just build a ported box from the get go. Because it is doubtful that the sealed box you already have that I assume you are currently using is large enough to accommodate the needed airspace. But since he didn't say how big the box he has is this statement might not be correct either. Or did I miss that bit of information??
