Do I NEED an amp?

Hey, I just got some new speakers for 93' grand prix and was wondering...I just put polk db460's in the front and they sound fine...im guessing because they are relatively low wattage...but i just threw some polk DB690's in the rear and they sound like crap...they are really muffled and distorted...Does this mean that its not getting enough power from the HU itself?

You could always use more power, looks like they are underpowered after looking at them. Amp them up to utilize their rating, they should sound reall good in that car.

sure they are sealed all up around the baskets? Maybe they are wired out of phase?
