Do dual voice coils require hook up?

I did a search and did not find exactly what i was looking for... although i may have over looked it.

I understand i can change the impedence of the speaker load with dual voice coils.

My question:

If i have a sub with dual voice coils, do both pair of coils need to be hooked up to get optimal performance from the sub?

Question Rephrased?

Will the sub operate more optimally if 1. hook up one pair of the pair of voice coils and pump 600watts (for example) or 2. hook up both pair of voice coils and pump about 300 watts to each?

Will either method damage or impede the sub's performance?

Thanks for any feedback.

I say that it would be best for you to wire both VC instead of 1 even though I dont know what would happen, as for your using 1 VC it would be better if you used both VC so you could send more power when its wired in parallel.

regardless...u need both VC's hooked up man. you can either wire the sub in series (higher impendance...with dual2 this will be 4 ohms...and with dual 4 this will be 8 ohms. Wire pos of one coil to neg of other coil...then run remaining pos.neg to terminal on box...then from box to amp.) or in parallel (lower impendance...dual2=1ohm, dual4=2ohms. wire pos.s of one coil to pos. of other coil then run from that coil to pos on box terminal then to amp...do the same for neg.) But yeah, to better help u decided...what is ur exact sub and amp. peace

Heh, sounds like trying to walk on one leg..... Each VC has its own max rms etc etc, so you are losing power... depending on the sub of course //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

What kind of sub(i.e. impedence of each coil) and what kind of amp?
thanks guys

I am looking at the e12a.22 (dual 2ohm speakers)

I wanted a pair

it would be nice to send 500 to 750 watts to each speaker

so i was looking at the Audiobahn 1800DT

i can wire the subs in an 4ohm load each then put both subs (as seperate 4ohm loads) in parallel to make a 2ohm load to the amp.

The amp does not deliver full power at a 2ohm load and the load that induces the signal reproduction to decline (S/N ratios is not at its highest point; goes down to something like 88 if i remember reading another post right)

This is why i raised the question about running just one set of voice coils on the subs to extract full power from the amp (by an 1ohm load)

AUDIOBAHN A18001DT

Specs:

Class D Circuitry

Multi Stranded Power Supply Toroids

THD: 0.05%

S/N Ratio: >100dB; Frequency Response: 10Hz - 40KHz (+/- 1dB)

Variable 18dB Low-pass Crossover: 50Hz To 250Hz

Variable Bass Boost: 0 - 18dB

Variable Bass Boost Frequency: 40Hz - 100Hz

Subsonic Filter: 20Hz to 50Hz

Variable Phase Control: 0? - 180?

Large Display Volt Meter With blue Illumination

Throughput RCA Connections

4-way Protection Circuitry: Thermal, Short Circuit, Overload, and DC Offset

Dual Cooling Fans

4 Ohms Mono: 600 x 1

2 Ohms Mono: 1200 x 1

1 Ohm Mono: 1800 x 1

If i hook up the pair in a 2ohm load, each sub will see approx. 600W giving each VC 300W (is that correct???)

Another Q: How does the Subsonic Filter work (particularly with these subs)???

BTW: would prefer to use only one amp for the subs instead of two seperate amps

ALL Suggestions and comments are welcomed

well, look into other amps of course. you can find one that fits ur needs at the required ohm load. Also, check out ebay for planet audio amps, tsunami 1800. peace

i have been reading a lot of posts about comparing amps... can you guys give me some competitive models to the audiobahn a18001DT

I decided to rule out tsunami 1800 b/c of the comparison of all the specs (with the audiobahn amp)

Anymore suggestions or arguments.... and again thanks
