You can make cheaper versions. Single 15" or 12", lower end drivers, etc. But they may not last very long with the abuse they will get in a frat house. The speakers you first linked to wouldn't last a week before you blew them up, or got fed up with how bad they sounded.

If you want cheaper you can get the same type of reciever with a pair of book shelf speakers (like Polks or build your own from a kit) and add a plate amp with a 12" or 15" sub and build a box. Not as cool looking as the Magna *** Laudes, but it will still rock, bump and get loud.

I am great to answer your any questions.

Try a speaker kit from madisound or parts express like the "Budget Busters" (currently out of stock //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif ) woofer with tweeter and crossover (or a single full range driver like the Dayton full range speaker), add a sub plate amp and 15" sub from Parts express and build the speaker/sub boxes yourself from MDF and you'll have a pretty decent/rocking system from not a lot of money.

For really cheap get a set of coaxial speakers and install them in mdf boxes. If they are car speakers, usually 4 ohm, you will need a reciever that can drive a 4 ohm load like the onkyo reciever I mentioned before, or wire 2 pairs in parallel to achieve an 8 ohm load. Which will also give you twice the power handling ability and twice the hearing damage, but at twice the cost. Or find an 8 ohm coaxial speaker with decent power handling. Add a sub plate amp and a 15" sub in a decent vented box and you'd have a cheap but loud system.

These coaxials are only $20 each, $40 a pair. Or get 2 pair ($80) for an easy 8 ohm load and twice the hearing damage. Still leaves you plenty in your budget for reciever, plate amp, sub, and MDF. Cover the speakers with black grill cloth and no one will know what they are. Let people think you spent a fortune on them.

thanks diduhearthat
how do i hook all this up to my laptop?

AUX?

You just need an adaptor to go from your computer headphone output to the receiver input. Usually just a stereo 1/8" plug to dual RCA plugs. If you get any buzz or it doesn't sound good add a pair (one for each R and L) of audio isolation transformers inline. Available at Radio Shack.

The best way is to have a decent audio card in the computer with line level outputs.

i'm experimenting to see how much power i need for home audio. I use to have a sony bookshelf system that was like 500W. wasnt loud enough for me

Should I go 500 or 1000 for my plate amp?

i want to be able to hear these speakers outside the house if i open the window.

im working on putting something together.

so far i have that sherwood receiver most likely to power my speakers.

is there an input on it for my plate amp?

im thinking about the 500W plate amp and a dayton or peerless subwoofer
